# AŠELYOM VA-NORATHIEL
## Volume II — The Sound of the Language
# Chapter 7 — The Official Sound Inventory
### Edition 0.2
---
## 1. Purpose of the Sound System
Ašelyom Va-Norathiel is designed to sound:
- Calm without becoming weak
- Musical without becoming theatrical
- Clear without becoming mechanical
- Ancient without imitating an existing language
- Gentle enough for reflective speech
- Strong enough for truth, boundaries, warnings, and disagreement
The language favors open vowels, flowing consonants, measured rhythm, and phrases that can be spoken comfortably within a calm breath.
Its sound is influenced by the visual and rhythmic character of Georgian and by the ceremonial atmosphere associated with Enochian. It does not reproduce either language.
Ašelyom Va-Norathiel remains an original constructed language.
---
## 2. The Twenty-Four Spoken Seeds
The language contains twenty-four spoken Seeds:
- Six vowel Seeds
- Eighteen consonant Seeds
The Silent Parent Seed, **Ø**, is not spoken and is not counted among the twenty-four.
### Official Seed Order
**A E I O U Æ M N**
**L R V H Y S Š Þ**
**T D K Č P B G J**
Lowercase:
**a e i o u æ m n**
**l r v h y s š þ**
**t d k č p b g j**
---
## 3. The Six Vowel Seeds
Vowels are spoken clearly and consistently.
They should not shift into English-style diphthongs. Each vowel remains one steady sound.
| Seed | IPA | Approximate Sound | Example |
|---|---:|---|---|
| **a** | /ɑ/ | “ah,” as in *father* | **ašel** |
| **e** | /e/ | pure “eh,” similar to Spanish *e* | **seya** |
| **i** | /i/ | “ee,” as in *see* | **iel** |
| **o** | /o/ | pure “oh,” without an English glide | **soren** |
| **u** | /u/ | “oo,” as in *moon* | **elum** |
| **æ** | /æ/ | “a,” as in *cat* | **æla** |
### Vowel Rule One — Purity
A vowel is normally pronounced as one stable sound.
For example:
**o** is /o/, not the English /oʊ/.
**e** is /e/, not /eɪ/.
### Vowel Rule Two — No Phonemic Length
Edition 0.2 does not distinguish between short and long vowels.
A longer vowel may express emotion, ceremony, or emphasis, but it does not change the dictionary meaning of a word.
Example:
**Kai.**
Normal acknowledgment.
**Kaai …**
A prolonged, emotionally resonant acknowledgment.
The second form is expressive pronunciation, not a separate word.
### Vowel Rule Three — Adjacent Vowels
When two vowels appear together, they are normally pronounced separately.
Examples:
**iel** → /i.el/
**seya** → /se.jɑ/
**norai** → /no.ɾɑ.i/
A **y** may be inserted in writing when a clear /j/ transition is intended.
---
## 4. The Eighteen Consonant Seeds
| Seed | IPA | Approximate Sound | Notes |
|---|---:|---|---|
| **m** | /m/ | *moon* | Warm nasal resonance |
| **n** | /n/ | *near* | May soften slightly before other consonants |
| **l** | /l/ | *light* | Always clear, never heavily darkened |
| **r** | /ɾ/ | tapped Spanish-style r | A gentle single tap |
| **v** | /v/ | *voice* | Never pronounced as English w |
| **h** | /h/ | *heart* | Soft breath, not harsh |
| **y** | /j/ | *yes* | Always a consonant |
| **s** | /s/ | *sun* | Always voiceless |
| **š** | /ʃ/ | *shine* | Written **sh** in plain ASCII |
| **þ** | /θ/ | *thin*, *breath* | Always voiceless |
| **t** | /t/ | *time* | Light, unaspirated when possible |
| **d** | /d/ | *dawn* | Clear and grounded |
| **k** | /k/ | *kind* | Never pronounced as s |
| **č** | /tʃ/ | *choice* | Written **ch** in plain ASCII |
| **p** | /p/ | *peace* | Light rather than explosive |
| **b** | /b/ | *body* | Clear voiced stop |
| **g** | /g/ | *garden* | Always hard g |
| **j** | /dʒ/ | *journey* | Never pronounced as y |
---
## 5. Official Decisions
### 5.1 The Sound of R
The official **r** is a single tongue tap:
**/ɾ/**
It resembles the sound in the Spanish word *pero*.
A rolled **/r/** may be used in ceremonial speech, singing-like recitation, emotional emphasis, or regional pronunciation.
The rolled form does not change the word’s meaning.
### 5.2 The Sound of Þ
The Seed **þ** represents only the voiceless sound:
**/θ/** as in *thin*, *breath*, and *path*.
The voiced English sound /ð/, as in *this* or *mother*, is not a native sound in Edition 0.2.
Borrowed words containing /ð/ may be adapted using:
- **d**, when a stronger voiced form is desired
- **þ**, when preserving the original manner of articulation matters more
Example:
English *this* could be adapted approximately as **dis** or **þis**, depending on context.
### 5.3 The Sound of H
The Seed **h** is breathlike and gentle.
It should not become a harsh throat sound.
It may become faint between vowels during natural speech, but it should remain audible when meaning could become unclear.
### 5.4 The Sound of L
The language uses a clear **l**, similar to the beginning of the English word *light*.
It avoids the heavy “dark l” heard at the end of some English words.
### 5.5 The Sound of G
The Seed **g** is always hard:
**garen** begins like *garden*.
It never takes the sound of English j.
### 5.6 The Difference Between Y and J
**y** = /j/, as in *yes*
**j** = /dʒ/, as in *journey*
Examples:
**seya** → /se.jɑ/
**jalen** → /dʒɑ.len/

## 6. Native and Ceremonial Pronunciation
Ašelyom Va-Norathiel recognizes three speaking modes.
### 6.1 Living Speech
Used in ordinary conversation.
Characteristics:
- Natural pace
- Clear but relaxed vowels
- One-tap r
- Short practical pauses
- No forced solemnity
### 6.2 Reflective Speech
Used in intimate conversation, discernment, teaching, or the Threshold.
Characteristics:
- Slightly slower pace
- More space between phrases
- Fuller vowels
- Clearly observed breath marks
- Silence treated as part of the utterance
### 6.3 Ceremonial Speech
Used for the Founding Voice, blessings, constitutional readings, and sacred or communal texts.
Characteristics:
- Deliberate pacing
- Longer but unforced vowels
- Optional rolled r
- Stronger rhythmic structure
- Full observance of silence and breath punctuation
Ceremonial speech must not become the only “correct” pronunciation.
Ordinary speakers should be able to use the language naturally without sounding as though they are constantly performing a ritual.
---
## 7. Stress
The default stress falls on the next-to-last syllable.
Examples:
**a-ŠE-lyom**
**SO-ren**
**ÞA-len**
**NA-reth**
**E-lum**
**va-ÞA-len-iel**
When a Bloom ending is added, stress is recalculated according to the complete word.
Examples:
**SO-ren**
**so-REN-ar**
**so-ren-I-el**
**SO-ren-om**
Ceremonial names may preserve a traditional stress pattern even when it differs from the normal rule.
---
## 8. Syllable Division
Every vowel normally forms the center of a syllable.
Examples:
**Ašelyom**
a-še-lyom
**Norathiel**
no-ra-þi-el
**Va-Soren**
va-so-ren
**Thaleniel**
þa-le-ni-el
The sequences **š**, **þ**, and **č** each represent one Seed and one consonant sound.
They must not be divided.
---
## 9. Foundational Spelling Correction
The official native spelling of the journey root is now:
**Þalen**
Pronunciation:
**/ˈθɑ.len/**
The earlier spelling **Thalen** remains acceptable in English-facing materials and historical Edition 0.1 documents.
The forms are categorized as follows:
- **Þalen** — official Seed spelling
- **Thalen** — English-friendly transliteration
- **thalen** — plain-ASCII form when þ is unavailable
This same rule applies to all Seed characters:
| Official | English-Friendly | Plain ASCII |
|---|---|---|
| **š** | sh | sh |
| **þ** | th | th |
| **č** | ch | ch |
| **æ** | ae or æ | ae |
Official language materials should favor the Seed spelling.
---
## 10. Pronunciation of the Language’s Name
### Official Form
**Ašelyom Va-Norathiel**
### Seed-Normalized Form
**Ašelyom Va-Noraþiel**
### Pronunciation
**/ɑˈʃe.ljom vɑ noˈɾɑ.θi.el/**
Approximate English guide:
**ah-SHEH-lyom vah no-RAH-thee-el**
The historical spelling **Norathiel** may remain in the official name because it is part of the language’s founding identity.
Within ordinary derived vocabulary, the dedicated Seed **þ** should be used.
---
## 11. Sound Symbolism
Sound symbolism offers poetic resonance but does not determine dictionary meaning by itself.
The following associations guide word creation:
| Sound | Suggested Resonance |
|---|---|
| **a** | opening, beginning, outward life |
| **e** | awareness, recognition, attention |
| **i** | clarity, precision, rising perception |
| **o** | wholeness, enclosure, return |
| **u** | depth, grounding, inward stability |
| **æ** | mystery, crossing, meaning beyond direct explanation |
| **m** | embodiment, warmth, nearness |
| **n** | relation, continuation, movement toward |
| **l** | life, flow, gentleness |
| **r** | movement, return, transformation |
| **v** | living vibration and expression |
| **h** | breath, openness, release |
| **s** | motion, continuity, subtle energy |
| **š** | quiet light, inward illumination |
| **þ** | passage, crossing, breath through form |
| **t** | direction, distinction, deliberate movement |
| **d** | grounding, embodiment, action |
| **k** | definition, edge, clarity |
| **č** | change, choice, transformation |
| **p** | emergence and release |
| **b** | form, containment, physical presence |
| **g** | growth, strength, generation |
| **j** | directed becoming and active journey |
These are creative guides, not rigid rules.
A word may contain sounds whose symbolism differs from its final meaning when history, clarity, or natural use supports that form.
---
## 12. The Breath Test
Before a new word is accepted, it should pass the Breath Test.
A proposed word should be:
1. Pronounceable without strain
2. Clear when spoken slowly
3. Recognizable when spoken naturally
4. Comfortable within an ordinary phrase
5. Distinct from existing core words
6. Compatible with the twenty-four Seeds
7. Capable of being spoken both gently and firmly
A word does not belong merely because it looks beautiful.
It must live comfortably in the mouth, breath, ear, and shared field.

## 14. Status
The official sound inventory is now stable enough to support:
- Native word creation
- A formal phonotactic system
- Pronunciation lessons
- Script development
- Dictionary entries
- Recorded speech
- Grammar construction
The next technical chapter is:
# Chapter 8 — Phonotactics
It will establish exactly how the Seeds may combine, which syllables are legal, how words may begin and end, and what makes a word sound authentically Ašelyom Va-Norathiel.
